Cold Summer Nights

Is it a rock opera? Nah. That’d be too pretentious.

But it is a story; an album-length journey (here’s the plot) of a young man grappling with unrequited love, indecisiveness and all the other sorts of things young men dwell on. Our hero longs for the pretty girl, screws up the courage the ask her to dance, ends up just screwing up. We follow his adventures, musings on space and time, reflections on friendship, love, and life, as he finally discovers what love is really all about. Track list is right here; lyrics are down below.

Lyrics

Barefoot

She's blonde and she's built with wind in her hair
A wicked sharp tongue behind a blue-eyed stare
Laugh soft and low through lips that blow
With glistening dew--she's just that cool

Well come on girl
Come on let's see what you got
Sandals on your shoulder
My words are all tied up in knots
Come on girl
Come on let's see what you got
Swinging your hips
	Barefoot in the parking lot

Singing along with the windows rolled down
Hairpin curve and we spill out the sound
Keeping time on the dashboard
Midnight's last hours still unexplored

Cut-off jeans and a halter top
Half a can of beer on a quiet hilltop
Smell of gasoline and the taste of sunscreen
Our passionate glow lit up by the radio

Weekend is coming but there's nothing to do
My tank is topped off and I'm stocked up on brew
I'm waiting around in this lame little town
I'll sit here and stew, praying that she only knew

Look at her standing there
Barefoot in the parking lot

Crucible

There's Twos and there's Threes
There's You and there's Me
There's that girl across the room
Wearing little but cheap perfume

Then there's Ones and there's Twos
And I'm looking for you
The Ones they crash and burn
And yet they still yearn
The Twos they swirl around
With Four Feet off the ground.

Now there's Threes and there's Fours
And they're headed for the door
Where Fate was was kind, the rooster he cries "Mine"
Where Kindness was poor, the Ones they cry for More.

At last, the spotlight surrounds them
	Ones on the Bleachers
	Twos on the Floor
The Ones they try to reach her
	That rare and stunning creature
	But it's too late now
As she tears their very soul

There's Ones and there's Twos
And I'm looking for you
There's Ones and there's Twos
And I'm looking for you

Why Not Me

On the prowl you're looking now
For someone just like you
A brand-new date you can celebrate
You want this one to be true

You've tried them all, both short and tall
Guys of every stripe
But they're not for you, no they just won't do
Maybe they're not your type

Why don't you open your eyes?
You look but you never see
I'm a regular guy just a little bit shy
	So why not me?

I think it's fair we'd make a pair
At least one of us is smart
They call you a tramp and I collect stamps
We're not that far apart

You might hear them say some rumors today
Awful gossip they spread
But it's not true they say things about you too
I wasn't even arrested

A loser; a fake; a charlatan; a snake
Black trench coat and the works
I don't lift weights and I can't see straight
But I'm not like all those jerks

So drop your guard and try real hard
To picture what could be
When all's said and done we might have some fun
So really, why not me?

Just consider a little less glitter
I'm an average guy you see
Don't turn and run just stay and have some fun
	Why not me?

I make an excuse to talk to you
Caught like a deer in the light
You opened a door I was hoping for more
You were just being polite

Why don't you open your eyes?
You look but you never see
I'm a regular guy just a little bit shy
So really, why not me?

Outta Time

What do you plan to do
Can you really see it through
Another day?

How? No reflection clearly
Who I see looks like me
Tomorrow greets yesterday

When does this feeling end
Who is this shadow friend?

	Oh it's me
	Come back to see
	Where I started from
	It's been too long

Since I saw the lights in the sky
Knew the reason why
Heard the forgotten song

That you sing so clear
Free from the shadow of fear

	It all seems so wrong
	It all seems so near
	Where I started from
	It's been too long

Now I'm outta time

Cold Summer Night

Floodlights by the pool
Icy white light, skin so cool
Bright eyes flashing, hidden jewels
Gang's all here, king, queen, and fool

Some in Love and some in Like
Lost in the dark
	Of a cold summer night

All by themselves
Alone on the grounds
All is fair
No out-of-bounds

She slips out of her dress
	And into the water
	He struggles and wonders
	If he should follow

Now they've gone off
And they've gone home
And he's left wandering all alone

Will it ever turn out all right?
Lost in the dark
Of a cold summer...
Reaching up to the sky
Up and out of sight
Lost to the dark
	Of a cold summer night

To the top of the hill
To the clearing where they will
Watch the stars slip out of sight
Lost to the dark
	On a cold summer night
